The park was first a part of the nearby New Haven Colony when it opened in 1877 and has remained a part of it ever since. It got its name from the prominent East Rock, a traprock peak that can be found in the surrounding area. The East Rock is famous for the sheer cliffs that surround it as well as the expansive views that it provides of Long Island Sound and New Haven. Since then, the park has evolved into a popular location for a variety of outdoor pursuits, including bird watching, cycling, and hiking.

The intersection of Orange Street and Humphrey Street serves as the primary access point into East Rock Park. Visitors are greeted by an expansive open field upon entering the park, which functions as the primary gathering area for parkgoers. In the field, there are picnic tables and grills, making it an ideal place for people to get together with their friends and family. On the opposite side of the field is where you’ll find the trailhead that will take you to the top of East Rock.
